I was sitting at the computer at 4:30pm Friday afternoon, pondering a quiet night in, when I got a text from a friend saying “I’m back in town. Wanna go to a kiss-in at 6?”
The short version: Marie Claire published a blog post about the TV show “Mike and Molly,” whose main characters are overweight. Blogger Maura Kelly, who didn’t even watch the show, expressed her disgust at having to watch fat people kiss on TV. (In fact, she doesn’t want to have to look at fat people, EVER. It makes her uncomfortable.) People gathered outside the Hearst Building to express their disagreement in the form of smooches, pecks, informational pamphlets, and signs like “Kiss My Grits, Maura Kelly!” I drew this cartoon on-site.
The rest of my weekend was: Farmer’s market, massive cookie-baking, party at Bergen Street Comics (the aftermath of which lasted till 5am), Sunday-afternoon orchestra concert (for which I’d baked the cookies), dinner, and nighttime Halloween festivities in the Village. Whew!
