Doing the Math
I drew this in Tasmania, our first port. It was mostly an excuse to mess with gray tones; I used two brush pens filled with different ratios of ink and water. (You know who does this really well? Ben Dewey and his Tragedy Series–Check it out!)
First Impressions
Here are some sketchbook bits from my first days onboard. (I don’t know how anyone makes it through safety/environmental training without a sketchbook!) Speaking of environmental training: The training is about how the ship’s recycling, air and water systems work, so that no-one clogs the water filtration system with used condoms, or gets hurt from […]
Sydney Opera House
This is how I got totally burned my first day in Australia. Since then, I’ve been indoors: at sea the first day, and then at training all morning, and now in the Seaman’s Center in Tasmania. People are playing pool, Skyping home or downloading movies for later. The fire/safety training happens every contract. Of course, […]
I Made it to Sydney!
After 30+ hours in transit, I made it to Sydney. I arrived the day before my contract started, so I met up with an Australian friend from my first contract. He gave me the best possible reception: a beachfront breakfast in nearby Brighton! Next I took the train into Sydney, and spent the whole day […]
Time Travel Becky
I’m trying to work out this whole “international dateline” concept. I’m writing this post on Sunday, flying to LA, and making the overnight trip to Sydney…arriving on Tuesday. You’re reading this (theoretically) on Monday. I’m trying to visualize where I will be at that moment, and all I can picture is me zapping into the […]
Sketchbook Time
I thought I’d put some more sketches up before I leave. The faces are bus/subway sketches from Portland and New York. It’s 6am here, but it’s 9pm in Sydney, where I’m going. My friend Mila can pack her suitcase a couple of hours before going to the airport. That’s what she tells me. She says […]
Bubble Tea Sketches
Here are some doodles from an evening of bubble tea and TALKING. ABOUT. COMICS. That’s Darryl Ayo and Marguerite Dabaie in the foreground. (They’re pretty awesome–Check out their stuff!) These sketches are brought to you by my brand-new travel scanner (ta-daa!). It takes some getting used to, but it’s small enough to go in my […]
The End.
[Beginning of this Storyline] Ta-daa–just in time! I toned the last four pages on Wednesday; on Thursday I flew from Portland to New York to get ready for my next ship. This is by far my longest story (since “Day 26,” which took me a frikkin year). Huge thanks to Periscope for all the help, […]
